The World Trade Center… 10 Years Later

16 Oct

When terror stuck the World Trade Center in 2001 it was my first year on the job after graduating from college. I remember going to work that morning to a beautiful sunny day. I arrived at the office settling in and just about 15 minutes into my day the news came on the television. A plane had struck the World Trade Center. The minutes after were all moments of disbelief as my coworkers and I watched the towers fall one by one. I could see the smoke billow in the distance looking out of the office windows. Phone lines were all tied up and people were stranded in the City with no mass transportation. Even if you had a car, it was pretty much a standstill.

Many people I know hiked home that day, from Manhattan to Brooklyn, Queens, or the Bronx.

From my home in Brooklyn that night, I could still smell the smoke that had traveled from Manhattan. Even into the next morning the smell was apparent.

The 10-year anniversary has arrived and it has brought back many of the memories kept from that tragic day. Yet peace has been found with a recent visit to the 9/11 memorial. What a beautiful site it is to help everyone remember those that were lost and to find more peace and comfort that we can all move forward even from such a tragic event.

An exhibit is expected to be available in the future to showcase different remains that help tell the story of that day. Yet, the select few remains that are available now already tell so much that you can truly feel how tragic an event this was.
